Dear Central High School Alumni,
I was pleased to receive a flyer about tomorrow's reunion, and I would have been there with you if I known about it earlier! I am deeply grateful for my Central High School years. I was the only child of poor, Swedish, God-fearing parents who sacrificed much to educate me. My parents and our high school prepared me well for the rest of my life.
I graduated from CHS in 1928. I had been involved in drama, dance, choir, and public speaking as recorded in that year's Becky. My best and long-life friend was Alice Brennan (Baine). Not long after graduation I was named Miss Maryland/Physical Culture. And, later, as a finalist in the DC beauty contest, I was presented an award by Flo Ziegfield.
After graduation from the University of Maryland, I did post-graduate work at U of M, GW, and the University of Wisconsin. I became a Dale Carnegie Instructor, but I missed teaching children. So I became a Speech and Language Pathologist and ESL instructor. I retired from the DC public schools in 1977.
Then, in Jekyll Island, GA, I became a professional storyteller, motivational speaker, and workshop presenter. (I was the oldest alumna at a Port Charlotte FL reunion in the early 90's.) Since my move to Toledo, OH in 1996, I have continued to enjoy the same pursuits.
At 97, I still treasure my memories of CHS! I love and appreciate the inspired and inspiring faculty and staff who did so much to prepare us for all the real world, our careers, and our families. God bless you as you convene tomorrow. (Below you will find a recent snapshot of my 2 daughters and children, and one of myself.)
